FD-06025A: with Steve Ryan, Morningside University Head Football Coach;
3x NAIA National Champions(2018, 2019, 2021);
4x American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) NAIA Coach of the Year;
18x consecutive years of making NAIA playoffs;
11x Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) championships;
10x GPAC Coach of the Year

Steve Ryan, the architect behind the Morningside University NAIA Juggernaut football powerhouse, pulls back the curtain to show you his approach to not only building a championship program, but also doing so in a manner that creates great football players who go on to becoming even greater people long after their playing days are behind them.

Ryan digs deep to provide real, tangible insight on the most-important factors in building up a football program.

Throughout this video, you will receive clear, real-world lessons on the importance of ‘coaching up’ both your players and your assistant coaches, as well as how to do the same for all team support-staffers working within your program, which provides a clear example of the importance of a shared vision for everyone involved with the football program. Consider this video a must-watch for any football coach – whether you are a first-time head coach, a veteran coach who’s taking over a new program at a new school, a coach who is facing the challenge of a rebuilding situation or a coach who simply wants to reinvigorate themselves and energize their approach to coaching within their current program.

Keys To Success & Building The Perfect Practice

Coach Ryan breaks down the critical essentials of building a football program with a rock-solid foundation and features a team that is a legitimate championship contender year-in and year-out.

Ryan breaks down his team’s philosophy for success, identifying three key personality traits that he tries to instill into his players at all times, even crediting his national championship success to these traits, which include Vision, Cohesion and Will To Win.

“Don’t expect players to rise up on game day, but rather, assume that they will fall back on preparation when the pressure is on.” This statement is at the core of Ryan’s approach to building a productive, positive practice. As such, viewers are sure to gain a new perspective of why practices are so important. According to Coach Ryan, there is not a more important team function than a scheduled team practice. He goes further, saying that every day that you have the good fortune of participating in a scheduled team practice, you have a situation where all of your players gather together collectively, in an effort to work on shared goals and improve as both individuals and as a team. Ryan adds that practice is the most important opportunity you have with your team – and they should be treated as such.

Ryan discusses the importance of a processed-oriented practice and outlines four key elements that every practice should contain, 1) Daily values, 2) Drive to increase effort (which include an emphasis on speed and commitment), 3) Focused drills that serve the best interest of your team (not just your favorite drill) and 4) Building in ‘creative redundancy’ in your practices.

Coach Ryan also covers his methods for building competition into practices – so that your practices contain that competitive, gameday-like feel to them. Ryan explains that some days it comes down to a balance of execution and competition, illustrating his point by showcase several go-to practice drills, including the Juno Drill (which creates more reps and improves execution), the King-of-the-Hill Drill (which builds and fosters a competitive spirit) and the Big Mo Drill (which applies game-like pressure during practice situations).

Building a Great Coaching Staff

Every successful head coach has a staff of outstanding assistants backing him who believe in the program. Coach Ryan provides valuable information that explains the job of each coach on staff and how these should serve as the standards to which all coaches must be held accountable. Coaching today is vastly different than it was 20 years ago. Ryan addresses this hard truth and explains that today’s most successful coaches are coaches who remain adaptive and keep up with a more modern-style of coaching and adapt to relate to players in a way that prepares them to compete against the best teams in the nation. Ryan offers his ‘daily standards for assistant coaches,’  which include being a ‘precision-coach’ who acts first-class in every aspect of coaching duties, as well as the importance of remaining organized.

Coach Ryan concludes this highly valuable coaching video by covering his approach to the off-season – explaining that, many times, the daily routine of the off-season is just as important to your football program as what happens on the field on game days. You then get an inside look at Ryan’s approach to the off-season and learn about the importance of building toughness, remaining relentless, building team-cohesion and finding new ways to give everyone involved a sense of overall responsibility to the football program.

This video is your first step toward building a winning football program and a team that competes at a high level, year-in and year-out!

Rating: 5 Stars

“This video contains some of the best information I have ever seen in a coaching video. It is far better than the majority of coaching clinics that I have attended. Effective immediately, I’ll be implementing a slew of Coach Ryan’s ideas from this video into my own program.”

FD-06025B: with Andrew Rode, Morningside University, Offensive Coordinator and Wide Receiver Coach;
FootballScoop.com's 2021 NAIA Coordinator of the Year;
2021 NAIA National Champion;
2017 Mid-States Football Association's Assistant Coach of the Year in 2017 (Concordia University);

RPOs offer a great answer to the multiplicity of defensive looks seen in today’s complex system of defenses. What makes RPOs so difficult to defend, is that they provide answers to most coverages that defenses show, while remaining extremely effective in manipulating defensive box counts to create favorable matchups and angles in the running game.

In this highly effective offensive video, Andrew Rode, Morningside’s Offensive Coordinator, pulls back the curtain on his approach to using RPOs and offers tactical information, with game film examples and detailed Xs and Os diagrams, that helps you learn how to keep opposing defenses guessing and on their heels.

Building Practice Plans Around RPOs

Coach Rode begins this video by showing off his approach to building a system of RPOs into his practices. Viewers will learn how to build a practice plan around RPO’s in order to increase their effectiveness and watch how Morningside uses their practice time to teach and implement drills that reinforce RPO concepts to their players, including points of emphasis on:

  • The drills that are most effective in teaching and perfecting RPOs.
  • Structuring repetitions in practice to maximize time and player learning, while reinforcing proper RPO techniques.
  • How to sequence your RPO play calling to confuse defenders and force them into uncomfortable situations.

Strategies For Building An Unstoppable RPO System

Coach Rode goes to great lengths in this video to teach the basic RPO routes based upon how defenses align and how to take advantage of their weaknesses. Receivers are allowed some freedom in their routes, to put themselves in the best position to get open, but overall, as Rode points out, the offense is designed to find creative ways to get your best players in position to stress the defense by running out of 2x2 or 3x1 formations.

Rode shows that by aligning certain players on the inside or outside, it creates positive matchups against certain defenders. This freedom within your offense provides receivers the opportunity to find open areas and gives them the confidence to play more quickly, which stresses the defense even more.

Throughout this highly valuable video, Rode uses extensive game footage examples that help to illustrate and explain the intricacies built within the Mustang RPO package. Using a philosophy of doing whatever is needed to keep a defense honest, provides this offense with advantages that rely upon: 1) Attacking the ‘conflict defenders,’ 2) Using leverage and numbers (either open grass or specific matchups), 3) Utilizing multiple formations, 4) Utilizing pre-snap motions and shifts, 5) Varying the run schemes to keep defenders guessing.

Coach Rode provides you with simple, yet highly effective methods for using RPOs to put defenses in conflict and keep them off-balance. By following Rode’s simple rules, your QB will be given the opportunity to dictate which play provides the best chance for success on each snap.

This video is a must-watch for coaches looking to turbo-charge their offense by implementing an explosive system of RPOs!

No matter the type of offense you run, this is a must-watch offensive line video for coaches of all levels of competition. No other position group relies on one another more than offensive lineman, and Schlicte provides highly valuable insight for coaching this unit to new heights!

Coach Rating: 5 Out Of 5 Stars.‘This is a great video. Concise and to the point. Efficiently providing offensive line fundamentals and the fact that he shows great examples of both drill work and practical applications with game footage is awesome.’

FD-06025D: with Nathan Turner, Morningside University, Co-Defensive Coordinator,
Defensive Line Coach & Strength/Conditioning Coach;
2019 and 2021 Named FootballScoop.com NAIA Coordinator of the Year;
3X NAIA National Championships (2018, 2019 & 2021)

Regardless of the type of defensive front you utilize, if your defensive linemen dominate and win the battle at the line of scrimmage, it will completely disrupt and thwart the opposing offense’s game plan and offensive goals. Having success along the defensive front also provides newfound flexibility and confidence for the back end of your defense – allowing them to ramp up their aggressiveness and attack the reeling offense.

Nathan Turner, Morningside’s Co-Defensive Coordinator and Defensive Line Coach, brings his national championship pedigree and knowledge to the forefront in this defensive line instructional video on utilizing successful block destruction techniques that disrupt an opposing offense’s run game and throw their pass-block schemes into disarray.

Block-Destruction vs. The Run GameCoach Turner wastes no time and dives into detailed information on using block disruption techniques to defeat an opponent’s running game. You will learn the five primary skills that defensive line need for consistent block destruction with visual pressure keys to reset the line of scrimmage – including examples of practice and game clips that show Morningside defensive linemen defeating backside cutoff blocks.

Resetting and controlling the line of scrimmage against the run is critical to the success of any defensive front. Turner outlines the best practices for executing the three main defensive lineman fundamentals: feet, hands and pad level to increase the success of the position group.

Coach Turner then showcases five strategies that support those key fundamentals with a progression of nine daily drills that coaches must use to create a dominant defensive line. Turner provides coaching tips and detailed game-film examples (including Championship games!) – that illustrates the importance of emphasizing and teaching ‘violent hands’ as a critical defensive lineman technique as well as stressing the ‘ownership-of-space’ principle.

Block Destruction vs. Pass Blocking, Creating a Pass-Rush Game Plan

Coach Turner provides a detailed overview on how he breaks down the opponent’s pass protections – with an emphasis on looking for personal weaknesses and scouting quarterback tendencies. Turner offers several informative examples that show the type of things that Morningside looks to exploit in an opponent’s pass game and provides details on how their defensive line is instructed to attack it.

You’ll receive important information on how Morningside teaches their defensive linemen to attack and what they need to identify as offensive linemen weaknesses, including:

  • Poor posture.
  • High and low hands in the punch.
  • The ‘Over and Under Set’ of an offensive guard or tackle

Learning how to identify various offensive tendencies and use that information to create a game plan, not only creates sack opportunities for defensive linemen, but it also disrupts the timing of the passing game and makes an opposing quarterback feel uncomfortable from the moment he takes the snap.

Coach Turner provides examples from previous games to demonstrate when to adjust pass rush lanes, the keys to executing pass rush games and techniques to counter offensive linemen when matched up one on one. Other valuable techniques that Turner highlights include:

a) Learning how to beat ‘slide protection’-

b) Adjusting rush lanes to work against a quarterback’s launch point and escapes -

c) How to properly execute 2- and 3-man pass rush games.

Turner offers his championship insight to making the fundamentals of defensive line play come to life in game situations. You will learn the details to create knockback and reset the line of scrimmage with the block-destruction progression. The pass rush game plan gives your defense a specific methodology to attack the weaknesses, week-in and week-out against an opponent’s offensive line.

Coach Review: 5 Out Of 5 Stars.‘Coach Turner does a fantastic job of keeping the coaching simple and emphasizing the important things you need to possess to have a dominant defensive front. One of the most impressive and enlightening segments of the video was his attention to detail from scouting opponents. Evaluating an opponent’s strengths and weaknesses and understanding what an opponent wants or likes to do, is key to getting players thinking football. Highlighting these areas of weakness and then watching him use teaching techniques and drills to expose them – and then watching his players successfully use this knowledge in a game – is coaching at its finest! This video is a master class for intermediate or advanced teams on getting your players to think football, not just to be bigger and stronger; but also the importance of being smarter and more prepared!’

Safety Drills For Game Day Success

The Safety position is responsible for helping defenses to stop both the ground and air attacks of opposing offenses. To begin this section of the video, James emphasizes that by teaching Safeties an array of multiple progressions to read wide receivers, it gives those secondary defenders the confidence to play fast and execute assignments.

James focuses on key coaching points of emphasis, including …

  • Multiple techniques for teaching Safeties to backpedal while maintaining leverage based on a variation of coverages and wide receiver routes.
  • Essential footwork drills that are designed to develop a Safety’s explosiveness out of a variety of break points.
  • An array of ball-disruption techniques for in-phase and out-of-phase coverage.

Using the progression of defensive back drills, Coach James demonstrates how Safeties can effectively cover any route they may see from an offense. James shows you four excellent backpedaling drills that he uses every day, including: 1) The Slow-Fast Pedal Drill, 2) The Weave Pedal Drill, 3) The Leverage Pedal Drill, and, 4) The Hip Sinks Drill. James provides in-depth commentary during video demonstrations of each drill and emphasizes the importance of daily individual-period drill work and how it impacts a player’s confidence and their ability to execute during a live-game setting.

Cover 4 Variations

Next, you’ll learn how Morningside uses their Cornerbacks, Outside Linebackers and Safeties to cover two-man route combinations. James provides in-depth coaching explanations and offers techniques for teaching all three positions with game film examples.

James describes the ideal situations to call cover 4 variations based on field position, offensive tendencies and offensive formation – while providing an inside look at the communication they use for the secondary in both pre-snap and post-snap situations, as well as showing multiple techniques for defenders to use based on offensive formations

James also covers positional leverage and how they use it to create numbers advantages for specific defensive schemes and offers tips for setting up favorable on-field matchups. He also provides game film examples of situations that show how the work done in drills can pay dividends in games! (including in a National Championship game!)

This video provides you with everything needed to build and develop the Safety position – effective practice schedules, valuable drills, key techniques, player mindset development and defensive systems – all of which are designed to get your defenders playing fast and with great confidence!

Coach Review: 5 Out Of 5 Stars.‘There are a lot of defensive back clinics out there, but very few of them focus on the details of Safety play. Having a video like this, one that’s dedicated to teaching Safeties is huge because of that position’s responsibility to stop both the run and the pass. After watching this video, it’s not surprising to see how Morningside has won 3 National Championships since 2018!’

Option-based schemes, as well as RPOs, have made playing Cover 4 a necessity for a lot of today’s defenses. Utilizing white board diagrams and game-film video examples, Jacobsen explains how he teaches his Safeties to fit common run plays so that the defense can keep the numbers in their favor.

Defensive Alignments

Coach Jacobsen begins by diagramming his basic defensive alignment, while explaining how he utilizes the Outside Linebackers to keep leverage on the formation and uses his Safeties as a means to cancel any extra gaps in their Cover 4 scheme. In addition, Jacobsen also demonstrates how using Safeties to leverage extra gaps allows his defense to remain simple for the players to learn, while decreasing the advantages that multiple formations provide for an offense.

As a further point of emphasis, Jacobsen demonstrates:

  • How interior gaps are defended within a 4-3 alignment.
  • Ensuring that the defense always plays with an overhang defender.
  • Utilizing Safeties to cancel gaps created by an H-back.

Defending Multiple Formations

Coach Jacobsen then shows several clips of game video to show his defensive scheme against multiple offensive formations and a variety of offensive schemes. He also shares several video clips of 3x1 and 2-back formations to demonstrate how consistent each player’s rules remain. Adjustments are shown to nub formations, as well as 2 TE alignments. Jacobsen offers terrific insight on key subjects such as using overhang linebackers to defend RPOs and how to teach Safeties and Corners to become involved in the run fit, based on formation. Jacobsen also covers how he teaches his players to adjust to motion while maintaining consistency with their keys, reads and responsibilities.

Possessing the ability to play Cover 4 and utilizing Safeties to defend the run game is a necessity if you want to have a good defense in the modern game.
